Often confused are the back slash (\) and forward slash (/), its easy to see why, not only are they sort of close on the keyboard — back slash is above the enter key and forward slash is to the left of the right shift key, we confuse them more because we don’t have a context for them, and seen individually we have to think about which one is which.
One easy way to figure out the different is to imagine a head and feet on them — personalise them.
If the person falls backwards then it is a back slash…
If the person falls forward then it is a forward slash…
Understanding when to use each one is the next step in the puzzle to demystifying the difference between back slash and forward slash.
Back slash which slopes inwards is used for inside your computer… ie when accessing your locally saved files.
Just think c:\ (which refers to the first folder on the hard drive of your computer).
Forward slash which slopes outwards is used for outside your computer… ie when accessing files on a remote computer or the internet.
Just think http://www. (which is what we use when accessing the internet) — which happens to be outside of our computer.
